Across Five Aprils (often A5A for short ) is an American metalcore band from Chattanooga , Tennessee , which was founded in 2001, split in 2008 and has been active again since 2012. The original line-up has been known as an independent band since 2010 under the name A Tragedy in Progress .
history
The band was formed in September 2001 by singer Steve Taylor, guitarists Zak Towe and Jarrod Smith, bassist Jason Barry and drummer Drew Miller. The band initially offered their songs online for download and held local tours before releasing their debut album A Tragedy in Progress via Indianola Records in May 2003 . Jason Fields was the new singer on the album before he left the band again in the fall of the same year. As a replacement, Taylor returned to the band, who had previously assumed the management position for the group. Various appearances followed on the east coast of the United States , before the EP Living in the Moment followed in autumn 2004 . In the spring of 2005, Taylor decided to concentrate completely on his management company. so that Brandon Mullins joined the band as the new singer. In July 2006, the next album followed with Collapse . After the band signed a deal with Victory Records , the band went into the studio with producer Matt Goldman to record the album Life Underwater , which was released in February 2008. The band announced their breakup that same year. In 2010 the original line-up came back together and has been active since then under the band name A Tragedy in Progress, named after the debut album. Across Five Aprils has also been active again since 2012.
style
According to Lauri Wessel from the Ox-Fanzine , the band played "a dark mixture of metalcore and emo- oriented sounds that is very reminiscent of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and FROM FIRST TO LAST " on Collapse . The metal passages in the songs consist of "fiddly" solos and double bass . In addition, the band also slide into melodic and emotional passages. According to Christian Kruse from Metal Hammer , the songs on Life Underwater are divided into aggressive verses and harmonic refrains. The Mullins' screams are extremely high and sometimes overturn. The songs would especially appeal to the emo audience.
