Acrotrichis atomaria is a beetle from the family of dwarf beetles (Ptiliidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 0.65 to 0.9 millimeters. Their body is black in color and has no metallic sheen. It is short and broad and arched. Often the sides and also the rear corners of the pronotum are reddish brown translucent. There are no feeler bristles on the sides. The strongly shiny pronotum is dense on the sides, otherwise sporadically structured in a punctiform manner. It is significantly wider than the wing panels, which are more or less tapered towards the end of the abdomen. The species is similar to Acrotrichis thoracica , but has smaller compound eyes that only consist of about 20 ommatidia . The cover wings are truncated at their end in a transversely rounded manner. They end strongly in the male, hardly tapered in the female. The scutellum is imperceptibly more densely grained than the wing. The antennae and legs are yellow, the former end in a clouded club.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is known in Europe, the Caucasus , North America and also from Guatemala. It is one of the most common species of the genus in Central Europe and is widespread everywhere. The animals live under leaves on the ground.
