It is short and broad and curved less than that of the similar species Acrotrichis atomaria . The sides of the pronotum are often reddish brown translucent. There are no feeler bristles on the sides. The strongly shiny pronotum is dense on the sides, otherwise sporadically structured in a punctiform manner. It is significantly wider than the wing panels, which are more or less tapered towards the end of the abdomen. The species differs from Acrotrichis atomaria in that it has larger compound eyes with about 30 ommatidia . The cover wings are truncated at an angle at their end. The antennae are brown or rust-colored, the legs are brown-yellow.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in Europe, including the Canaries and Madeira , the Caucasus, and Syria. It is widespread and not uncommon in Central Europe. The animals live under rotting plant material, often in company with Acrotrichis grandicollis and other species of the genus Acrotrichis .
