Acrotrichis montandoni is a beetle fromthe dwarf beetle family (Ptiliidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 0.65 to 0.7 millimeters. The body is colored black and has no metallic sheen, rarely the wings are colored dark brown. It lacks feeler bristles on the sides. It is slightly arched and relatively long, its sides are parallel. He is also hairy close-fitting. The pronounced pronotum is sometimes denser on the sides, otherwise it is loosely structured in dots. The cover wings are almost equally wide over the entire length and only very slightly tapered at the rear. The pronotum is not or only slightly wider than the wing. Acrotrichis montandoni is slightly larger than the similar Acrotrichis chevrolati . The antennae are dark brown with light basal parts. Occasionally they are also completely red-brown. The legs are reddish yellow, the rails ( tibia ) of the forelegs are provided on the underside apically with a row of increasingly larger bristles.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed in Europe, except in the far north and the Caucasus . It is widespread in Central Europe, but rather rare. They can also be found at high altitudes, in Carinthia up to around 2,300 meters above sea level. The animals live under dung, rotting plant material and on mushrooms as well as myrmekophil with ants such as the red wood ant ( Formica rufa ).
