Actinidin is an iridoid mono terpene - alkaloid and closely related to the nepetalactone .
Occurrence
Actinidin and nepetalactone are found in catnip ( Nepeta ), valerian ( Valeriana officinalis ) and the Australian ant Iridomyrmex nitidiceps .
properties
The oil with the empirical formula C 10 H 13 N boils at 100–103 ° C (1 kPa), has antimicrobial properties and has a deterrent effect on birds and arthropods . Actinidine acts as a pheromone in some species of ants . Actinidin and nepetalactone are effective attractants for cats, from which the common name catnip results.
