Adbusters (from the English words ad - short form of advertisement = 'advertisement' and the verb to bust - colloquial = 'smashed') are groups that alienate, paste over or otherwise redesign advertising in public spaces ( outdoor advertising ) to reverse or ridicule their meaning . The adbusters are a form of communication guerrilla and often come from the street art scene. Left- wing extremist groups also use adbusting for political protest. Today, in addition to parody short videos, advertising subjects and logos are often alienated, placed online or distributed via social media . Criticism of Adbusters comes from opponents of the brand, as an alienated presence also brings the brands additional attention.

The actions of the Adbusters often involve criticism of the consumer society , of the imagery of advertising photography and of visual pollution criticized by Adbusters . Above all, they complain that there are hardly any areas of life in which one can avoid advertising.

In France such motivated groups call themselves Déboulonneurs ( French for “screw loosener ”, “bolt pusher ”, “unscrewer”); in public actions, for example, they paint over billboards with slogans and wait until the police arrest them. With the hoped-for following processes, the Déboulonneurs are trying to bring the debate about what they call “advertising terror” to the general public.

Investigations

Adbusting usually represents damage to property or theft in the area of the de minimis limit. The protection of the constitution describes that left-wing extremists use adbusting as a form of action. Since 2018, authorities in Germany have taken stricter action against adbusting. This is how adbusting cases were handled in the Joint Counter-Extremism and Terrorism Center . A small request from the party Die Linke for further information was refused with a reference to "confidential interests in need of protection". The Constitutional Protection Report 2019 no longer mentions adbusting.
