Adactylotis gesticularia is a butterfly fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae). The species name is derived from the Latin word gesticularius meaning "pantomine" and was apparently chosen arbitrarily.
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 23 to 36 millimeters. The apex is pointed. The basic color of the upper sides of the wings varies in both sexes from ocher to white. All wings are provided with fine gray-brown speckles. Two predominantly straight, dark brown transverse lines on the upper side of the fore wing continue, weakened, on the hind wings. Another, inner transverse line is only hinted at, but is mostly missing entirely. The middle transverse line is particularly strong. The drawing of the wing tops shines through to the hind wing undersides.
Similar species
In the brown-forehead whitewater ( Cabera exanthemata ), the inner transverse line is always clearly developed. All three transverse lines are wavy or toothed.
distribution and habitat
The distribution area of Adactylotis gesticularia extends through Spain and Portugal as well as through southern France . The species is represented in Morocco with the subspecies Adactylotis gesticularia ungemachi . The main habitat are oak forests. In the mountains, the species rises to heights of at least 1500 meters.
Way of life
The moths are nocturnal and fly in two to three generations between March and October. At night they sometimes appear in large numbers from artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of oak species ( Quercus ), primarily holm oak ( Quercus ilex ), Portuguese oak ( Quercus faginea ), Pyrenees oak ( Quercus pyrenaica ) or Kermes oak ( Quercus coccifera ).
