The county's first courthouse was in Fontanelle . When the county seat was moved to Greenfield in 1874, a two-story building was erected in the center of town. In 1889 the building was destroyed by fire, so that the court and administration were temporarily housed in a theater.

The foundation stone for today's courthouse was laid in 1891. The red brick building was built according to a design by the architect S. E. Maxon in the neo-Romanesque style.

In 1981 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places with reference number 81000224 .
