Fontanelle was laid out according to plan in 1855. The city is named after a trapper from the American Fur Company .
First the city was named Summerset and was the first county seat of Adair County. The first courthouse was completed a year later. A referendum held in 1874 resulted in the relocation of the administrative headquarters to Greenfield, as this city was closer to the geographic center of the county.
