The Adalbert Stifter Monument is a monument in South Bohemia in honor of the painter, writer and educator Adalbert Stifter .

location

The monument is located on a ledge northeast of the Plöckenstein above the sea wall to the Plöckensteiner See , only about one kilometer northeast of the border triangle Germany – Austria – Czech Republic. It is only about 500 meters as the crow flies to the Austrian border. The next village is Nová Pec (Neuofen). The birthplace of Stifter Horní Planá (Oberplan) is thirteen kilometers northeast on the Moldau reservoir .

history

After Adalbert Stifter's death in 1868, friends and admirers drew up a plan in 1869 for a memorial for the poet in the area around the Plöckenstein. First of all, a quote from Stifter's work was to be chiseled into the wall of the lake in meter-sized letters. This plan was dropped for technical and financial reasons. Since an obelisk was erected on Stifter's grave in Linz in 1871 , it was decided to build a similar, albeit much larger, monument above Lake Plöckenstein. The architect was Heinrich Ferstel . The granite around the site was chosen as the building material. Construction began in May 1876. A viewing platform was built next to the actual monument. The monument was inaugurated on August 26, 1877.

After the Second World War and with the beginning of the Cold War , the border between what was then Czechoslovakia and Austria and Germany was closed and fortified. The border fence was sometimes several hundred meters away from the border. The memorial was now a few meters from the fence between the border and the border fortifications. This meant that the place was not accessible to the public for decades. Access was only possible again with the political change in 1989/90. Today the monument is located in the Šumava National Park and can be reached via hiking trails from all three countries.

The monument

The monument consists of a 14.5 meter high granite obelisk . On the front of the stone is the name of Adalbert Stifter and an appreciation. Two quotes from his works are written in the stone on the sides. The construction date was marked on the side facing the lake.
