Chuquiña is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Chuquiña is the central place of the canton Chuquiña and most populous place of the municipality Toledo in the province Saucarí . The town of Chuquiña is located at an altitude of 3753  m on the right bank of the Río Desaguadero , which in the Bolivian highlands connects Lake Titicaca in the north with Lake Poopó in the south.

geography

Chuquiña is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the high mountain range of the Cordillera Central . The vegetation of the region is sparse, because at this altitude no more lush growth is possible. The region has a typical time-of-day climate in which the daily temperature fluctuations are more pronounced than the temperature fluctuations between winter and summer.

The long-term average annual temperature is 8 ° C, the monthly values fluctuate between 4 ° C in June / July and 11 ° C in December (see Caracollo climate diagram). Nocturnal frost temperatures are possible in almost every season. The annual precipitation is low 400 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October and only from December to March there is significant precipitation of up to 100 mm in the monthly average. Due to the low rainfall, the sky is mostly clear and an intense blue color.

Transport network

Chuquiña is 52 kilometers by road from Oruro , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro, the paved national road Ruta 1 leads north towards Caracollo and La Paz . Five kilometers behind Oruro, a dirt road branches off to the northwest in the direction of La Joya and after 44 kilometers it crosses the Desaguadero River. Directly behind the bridge, a three-kilometer spur road leads south to Chuquiña .

population

The population of Chuquiña has fluctuated significantly over the past two decades:

year Residents source
1992 277 census
2001 871 census
2012 331 census

Due to the population structures that have evolved over time, the Aymara population is predominant in Chuquiña , while 83 percent of the population in the Municipio of Toledo speak Aymara .

Relocation

In the mid-1980s, the Inti Raymi Mining Company SA (IRSA) began developing large epithermal gold deposits in the Chuquiña and La Joya regions . To develop the deposits, the Kori Kollo mountain near Chuquiña was gradually removed and the opencast mine and processing plant brought close to the site. In negotiations between the mining company and the villagers, the latter finally agreed to relocate their hometown. So by 1999 the village of Villa Nueva Chuquiña was built with 135 houses, market facilities, a health station and an education center.
