Caracollo is a small town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Caracollo is the central place of the Municipio Caracollo in the province of Cercado . The city is located at an altitude of 3791  m on the Río Caracollo , which flows from the north to the Uru-Uru Lake and on to the Poopó Lake . To the northeast, the valley of the Río Caracollo is bounded by the Serranía de Sicasica , which here reaches heights of over 4500 m.

geography

Caracollo is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the high mountain range of the Cordillera Central . The vegetation of the region is sparse, because at this altitude no more lush growth is possible. The region has a typical time-of-day climate in which the daily temperature fluctuations are more pronounced than the temperature fluctuations between winter and summer.

The long-term average annual temperature is 8 ° C, the monthly values fluctuate between 4 ° C in June / July and 11 ° C in December (see Caracollo climate diagram). Nocturnal frost temperatures are possible in almost every season. The annual precipitation is low 400 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October and only from December to March there is significant precipitation of up to 100 mm in the monthly average. Due to the low rainfall, the sky is mostly clear and an intense blue color.

Transport network

Caracollo is 40 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Oruro , capital of the department of the same name. Caracollo is the intersection of various national roads in Bolivia.

Ruta 1 runs through the city from north to south , a 1215 kilometer long national road that crosses the entire Altiplano from Desaguadero on Lake Titicaca in the north and ends in Bermejo on the Argentine border.

From east to west Caracollo is crossed by Ruta 4 , which leads from Tambo Quemado on the Chilean border via Cochabamba and Santa Cruz to Puerto Suárez on the border with Brazil .

Caracollo is also the starting point of Route 44 , which from here opens up the Serranía de Sicasica in a north-easterly direction and ends in the city of Colquiri .
