Adalbert Brunke

Adalbert Leopold Max Brunke (born May 16, 1912 in Alt-Chapel , Karthaus district , † September 25, 2013 in Cape Town ) was Bishop of the Cape Orange Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa .

Life

Brunke was born in Alt-Chapel in West Prussia in 1912 , before his family moved to Pomerania a year later, where he first attended elementary school and from 1922 the Stephan high school in Stolp . After attending a commercial college for a year, he began training at the mission seminar of the Berlin Mission Society in 1937 . In 1939 he was sent to Tanganyika by the Evangelical Church in Germany . After the beginning of the Second World War he was interned by the British in South Africa for seven years . In 1949 he began working as a missionary. In 1957 he became superintendent . He was elected the first bishop of his diocese in 1972. He held this position until his retirement in 1978. Brunke was at times a prison chaplain on Robben Island , where he met Nelson Mandela . Mandela later thanked him for his work.
