Adalbert Castner
(Ludwig Emil) Adalbert Castner , occasionally Louis Castner , (born March 14, 1832 in Berlin; † September 22, 1907 there ) was a German modeller and zinc caster as well as an entrepreneur in the art casting industry .
Live and act
Adalbert Castner is a son of Emil Philipp Castner (1805–1849). In 1848 his father was an associate of the zinc foundry for art and architecture Moritz Geiß in Berlin, Chausseestr. 25 . There Adalbert Castner completed an apprenticeship as a modeller. Geiß soon made his capable employee managing director. When he retired in 1870, he handed the business over to him. Castner led the successful company continues under the name A. Castner front. M. Geiß, zinc and bronze foundry . In addition to building decorations, the product range also included "statues, groups, monuments and fountains". To sell the numerous products, Castner founded the trading company A. Castner & Co. on February 1, 1878 together with Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené, but Ravené died a year later. On June 1, 1881, the company was changed to A. Castner with Adalbert Castner as the sole owner.
Adalbert Castner took over the foundry at a time when the unification of the empire in 1871 and the events around it gave rise to a significant economic and cultural boom. The company had a large sales market for its products in Berlin and far beyond.
During the time of Castner's management, the company received important prizes at the World Exhibition in 1873 , at the International Horticultural Exhibition in Cologne in 1875 and at the International Exhibition in Sydney in 1879/80 . At the 1876 World's Fair in Philadelphia, the company exhibited bronzed cast zinc eagles and Corinthian column capitals.
Successor by Martin & Piltzing
Adalbert Castner retired from business life in 1889 and sold the foundry to Reinhold Martin (his brother Robert Martin for him in 1891) and his managing director Wilhelm Piltzing († October 9, 1905), who now merged their existing company with the Castner foundry the name A. Castner Nachf. Martin & Piltzing , from September 24, 1903 only under Martin & Piltzing . In July 1903 the two owners were awarded the title of Royal Court Sculptor . Robert Martin has been the sole owner of the company since 1911, followed by his son H. Martin under the same name until at least 1941.
