Adalbert von Tegernsee (* around 740; † around 800 in Tegernsee ) is considered the founder and first abbot of the Tegernsee Monastery .

Life

According to legend, Adalbert and his brother Oatkar (Otgar) belonged to the old Bavarian noble family of the Huosi . They founded the monastic community at Tegernsee around the middle of the 8th century. The relics of St. Quirinus are said to have been transferred as a gift from Pope Zacharias in 746 (or 761) to the Salvator Church in Tegernsee , which they founded . Adalbert became the first abbot of the monastery there, while Oatkar remained a lay brother. The exact dates of his tenure as abbot are not known. It is often assumed that he served as abbot from 762 to 800. According to legend, Adalbert died on November 1st (around the year 800 or 804), while Oatkar died before that.

In 1693 the relics of the donors were transferred under the high altar of the Church of St. Quirin (Tegernsee) . Like his brother Oatkar, Adalbert von Tegernsee is venerated as a saint . His feast day is February 26th. Pathological examinations carried out in 2016 on the skeletons of the founders of Tegernsee Monastery lead to the conclusion that Adalbert was born around the year 740, so that the founding of a monastery under Adalbert in 746 is highly unlikely.
