Adam Scheidt (born February 14, 1854 in Bavaria ; † 1933 in Norristown ) was a German-American brewer and, together with his brother Charles, owner of the C. & A. Scheidt Company , which he later headed as president under the name Adam Scheidt Brewing Company .

Life

Adam Scheidt's parents were the miller Johann Adam Scheidt (born September 23, 1809, † April 29, 1894) and Maria Catherine Scheidt (née Pfleger). He was the youngest of a total of eleven children and learned the craft of brewing and cooper as a teenager .

On December 12, 1874, he began his military service and was stationed in Metz . From March of the following year he spent five months at an officers' school, after which he was promoted and returned to his unit. In September 1876 he was transferred to Zwybriiken and promoted again. He was honorably discharged a year later.

In March 1878 he emigrated to the USA and joined his older brother Charles' brewery. Charles had previously worked as a restaurateur before buying the Moeshlin brothers' brewery in 1870. Together they ran the company until October 9, 1884, when Charles passed away. Adam Scheidt then took over the management of the brewery. Under him it was officially registered as the Adam Scheidt Brewing Company in 1890 . In 1891 he made an extensive trip to Germany.

Scheidt ran his company with success: until the beginning of Prohibition , the Scheidt brewery was the tenth largest of the 50 breweries in the Philadelphia region . Subsequently, Scheidt introduced his son Adam Scheidt Jr., who graduated from the Pennsylvania Military College in 1906, into the business.

In addition to his entrepreneurial activity, Adam Scheidt was active in various other industries, organizations and associations. He was president of the Penn Trust Company, the First National Bank of Norristown, the Central Trust Company of Philadelphia and held interests in other operations in Pennsylvania and other US states.

Scheidt was Protestant. In politics he represented Republican opinions. He died in 1933 of pneumonia. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Norristown. His son Adam Scheidt Jr. took over the management of the brewery. The Adam Scheidt Brewing Company was still in operation until 1974 when it was closed by C. Schmidt & Sons .
