Adam and Dog is an American animated short film of Minkyu Lee from the year 2012 .

action

Shortly after the creation of the world, the first dog explores the Paradise Garden of Eden . He barks at a mammoth , watches the fireflies and is frightened of a hippopotamus. In a grain field he meets the first man Adam. Adam gives the dog something to eat and strokes it. The next day the dog visits Adam and the game of stick throwing happens by chance. A relationship of trust develops between Adam and the dog, both explore paradise and stay together.

One day Adam meets Eve. Although he still throws sticks for the dog, he is hardly interested in him anymore. When the dog keeps coming back with the stick, Adam throws the stick as far as he can. When the dog returns, Adam and Eve are gone. The dog searches in vain for both in the near future. Suddenly there is a violent thunderstorm and the dog hides with the stick still held in its mouth. In the distance he sees Adam and Eve fleeing and runs after them. He draws attention to himself by barking, but shrinks when he sees Adam's completely changed, raw appearance. Adam and Eve flee from paradise and head bowed down into the desert-like void. The animals, including the dog, look after them from the edge of paradise. While all the other animals turn away after a while and retreat into the jungle, the dog follows Adam and Eve. In the distance you can see Adam greeting the dog and Eve kneeling down and getting to know the dog. The three of them disappear into the distance.

production

Director Lee came up with the idea for Adam and Dog while studying directing at CalArts . He started working on the film in late 2009. Lee created the film with a team of befriended animators who worked free of charge over the next two years in his spare time. In addition to Lee, the main animators were Jennifer Hager , James Baxter , Mario Furmanczyk , Austin Madison and Matt Williames . Lee then devoted six months to completing the film. Disney animator Glen Keane was at his side as a mentor . The production costs of Adam and Dog amounted to between 10,000 and 20,000 dollars that the employed at Disney animator Lee mustered themselves.

According to Lee, the film aims to explain why there is such a close bond between humans and dogs. In contrast to many animated films, the dog is not portrayed as "human" and does not speak either.

Awards

Adam and Dog won the 2012 Annie Award for Best Animated Short Film. The film was nominated in 2013 for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ”.
