Boari studied first at the University of Ferrara and then at the University of Bologna , where he graduated in 1886. After doing some architecture and design work in Turin , he went to Brazil in 1889 , where he was commissioned to organize an exhibition and mainly toured Buenos Aires and Montevideo . After contracting yellow fever in Brazil , he went to the United States and settled in Chicago . In 1899 he was licensed as a foreign architect to work in the United States. In 1903 he went to Mexico , where he made a name for himself by working on several churches (1898), the "Templo Expiatorio" (1999; German : Temple of Atonement ) and a memorial to the dictator Porfirio Díaz (1900). He was then commissioned by Díaz to build the Palacio de Bellas Artes (German: "Palace of Fine Arts") and the Palacio Postal (German: "Post Palace") in Mexico City . He did some of the planning work in Frank Lloyd Wright's studio . The Palacio Postal was completed in 1907. Although Boari had already started building the Palacio de Bellas Artes in 1901, he was unable to finish it himself due to the beginning of the Mexican Revolution and the associated technical and economic difficulties. In 1916 he went back to Italy, there initially to Rome. In Italy, by chance, he was entrusted with the project management of the New Theater of Ferrara in his hometown , which his brother Sesto then completed. Some elements of this theater are reminiscent of the Mexican National Theater in the Palacio de Bellas Artes .

The Palacio de Bellas Artes was not completed until after Boari's death in 1934.
