history

In 1934 Johann Berghofer founded a small paint shop in the old town of Schwaz. In the store's storerooms he soon began to produce oil paints, matting, polishes and floor care products himself.

In 1947 the first production building was built on what was then the outskirts of Schwaz, in which 50 tons of paint were produced each year. In 1953 the word and figurative mark "ADLER" was registered and the production building was expanded.

When the founder of the Adler-Werk died in 1964 at the age of 54, his son Günther Berghofer and his mother Hermine Berghofer took over the company with 45 employees. The Adler brand developed from the small paint shop.

From 1974 to 1983 Günther Berghofer had the most modern paint factory in Europe built by the standards of the time at a new location "on the green meadow" on the outskirts of Schwaz in three construction phases. In addition, a laboratory building, a high-bay warehouse and an environmental protection and recycling center were built at the new company location. From the 1980s, ADLER pushed the development of environmentally friendly and low-emission water-based paints. Today 65% of the products are made on a water basis.

In 1999 Günther Berghofer's daughter Andrea Berghofer joined the management of the family business. Internationalization was stepped up and new markets opened up. From 2016 the company location was expanded to include the most modern water-based paint factory in Europe, which works according to an energy-saving modular production process. In 2019 a new logistics center with a fully automated high-bay warehouse was built.

In 2010 the Adler factory was named an “Excellent Tyrolean Apprenticeship Company” and was named “Austria's Leading Company” in the Tyrol category by the business newspaper.

environmental Protection

65% of the 10,000 articles in the ADLER range are water-based. Most of the wall paints and several ADLER wood protection products have been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel. In addition, various ADLER products are certified according to the Cradle to Cradle cycle management principle. The factory in Schwaz has its own environmental protection and recycling center, in which solvent-laden waste water and air are cleaned. The company is voluntarily certified according to Responsible Care and was the first Austrian paint factory to be certified according to ISO 50001 (energy management). Since 2018, ADLER has been one of the first companies in its industry to be 100% climate neutral.
