The Admiralty Road ( English Admiralty Sound ; Spanish Paso Almirantazgo (Chile), Estrecho Bouchard (Argentina)) is a strait about 75 km south of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula . It runs from northeast to southwest and separates James Ross Island in the northwest from Seymour Island and Snow Hill Island in the southeast.

geography

The Admiralty Road is about 55 km long, about 20 km in the area of Markham Bay, but only 5 km wide in the southwestern part. At their exit to the Erebus and Terror Gulf is the Cockburn Island , on the southwest exit the Lockyer Island . The banks of the Admiralty Strait are heavily glaciated in the southwest, while Seymour and Cockburn Islands are free of snow in summer. All islands in the area of the Admiralty Strait are rich in animal and plant fossils from the Cretaceous and the Tertiary .

history

On January 6, 1843, James Clark Ross discovered the northern entrance to the street he called Admiralty Inlet . It was not until Otto Nordenskjöld , as head of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition from 1901 to 1903, to realize that it was a road and not an inlet. He also demonstrated the island character of Snow Hill and Cape Lockyer , which Ross had already sighted. The discovery of the Prince Gustav Canal also made it clear that Mount Haddington is located on an island that Nordenskjöld named James Ross Island. The expedition wintered twice on Snow Hill Island, where their hut is now listed as Historic Site No. 38 under the protection of the Antarctic Treaty . Your visit is strictly regulated.

The Marambio Station, the largest Argentinian research station in Antarctica , has been located on Seymour Island since 1969 .
