The Adobe Creative Cloud is the subscription model of the company Adobe in the field of photo editing (especially Photoshop), video editing (especially Premiere, After Effects), graphic design and web development. Mainly desktop programs , but apps and cloud services are also part of it. The programs are available for local installation via the Internet via a monthly or annual subscription and can be used as long as the subscription is active. The possible shutdown of the programs is problematic. B. through political influence, see section Criticism .

The forerunner is the Adobe Creative Suite 6 (CS6) purchase software and was last released in 2012. In May 2013 the end of the purchase versions was announced and that all further developments will only be made available as a subscription via the Creative Cloud . The first pure cloud version appeared on June 17, 2013. The motivation for switching to a subscription was constant income, fewer pirated copies and a lack of pressure to develop new features for new versions.

Different subscription models are available for individual users, schools and companies and differ in terms of costs and features.

criticism

In October 2019, due to an instruction from US President Donald Trump, Adobe was forced to block all users in Venezuela, thereby rendering their programs unusable. For many, this highlighted the unreliability of cloud-based products.

Users are exposed to short-term changes to end-user license agreements (EULAs) by licensors without protection. Licensors and cloud operators can terminate existing access authorizations within a certain legal framework at any time, not only legally, but also physically, or request a subsequent purchase. This dependency did not exist before the introduction of the cloud-based subscription model.

Dolby license

In 2019, Adobe announced to its customers that certain older versions of the Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Premiere, Animate and Media Director programs could no longer be used for licensing reasons and recommended updating to more recent versions: “We recently got a few older versions of Creative Cloud applications discontinued. Due to our contractual conditions, you no longer have a license to use them. Please note that if you continue to use the discontinued version (s) there is a risk that third parties may assert violations. ”The background is apparently a legal dispute by Dolby Laboratories Inc. over license costs for the cloud-based subscription model.
