family

Adolf Georg Jakob was the son of Nicolaus von Thaden (1770–1848), lawyer, Kgl. dan. Council of Justice, Rr. D. Dannebrog, bailiff in Flensburg, owner of the Sünderuphof near Flensburg and Luise Nickels (1793–1856), daughter of the leaseholder of Dammkoog in Rödemis near Husum Hans Christopher Nickels and his wife Dorothea Thomsen.

Life

He attended high school in Altona, after passing his high school diploma, served as a soldier in the Rantzau Freicorps in the war against Denmark, moved to Heidelberg University in autumn 1848 to study medicine and was a student of Henle, Delffs , Nuhn, Chelius and Pfeufer. He later continued his studies in Kiel under Frerichs and Stromeyer and obtained a doctorate here in 1853 with the dissertation “De genu luxationibus spontaneis” while passing the medical state examination. For further training he made scientific trips with longer stays in Breslau, Prague and Vienna, then was Esmarch's assistant in Kiel for two years, visited Switzerland, Northern Italy and France in 1856 with the help of a travel grant granted to him by the Danish government, stayed for two months in Paris, Belgium and finally again for a long time in Berlin, where he heard Langenbeck and Graefe by name. In 1857 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in surgery in Kiel, often had the opportunity to represent Esmarch during his temporary absence, also assisted Litzmann at the obstetric clinic for two years and at the same time gave lectures on surgery, which were very well received. In 1861 he left Kiel and took over the position of senior physician in the surgical ward of the newly built hospital in Altona, where he developed a very beneficial and meritorious activity in both scientific and practical terms. He introduced some improvements to the institute mentioned by means of solitary buildings, etc., and set up an outpatient clinic.

Publications

As a result of more precise studies supported by detailed sections, von Thaden published, among others, the following works, which were published in v. Langenbeck's archive for clinical surgery (Vol. IV, VI and XVIII) published: “Colotomie nach Fine”; "About Spondylitis Deformans"; "A case of spontaneous peripheral urinary stone fragmentation"; “On rupture of the greater tuberosity with dislocation of the humerus”, as well as a number of articles in other journals, often gave lectures in Hamburg medical associations.

He dealt a lot with health care in general and the hygienic conditions of Altona in particular, also made a great contribution through his assistance in the war hospitals in Trautenau in 1866 and in the Altona reserve hospitals in 1870/71.

Since 1868 numerous long trips, also health-related, including several to South America. Adolf Georg Jakob von Thaden, who was appointed royal Prussian medical councilor in 1874, died on December 7, 1879 (cf. Biogr. Lex. V-689 and the source given there. Pagel).
