Adolf Willy Berthold Hollnagel (born August 4, 1907 in Neustrelitz , † January 23, 1975 in Schwerin ) was a German archaeologist .

Life

After attending the Carolinum grammar school in Neustrelitz, Adolf Hollnagel began an apprenticeship as a businessman (Nötzlemann, Neubrandenburg). He then worked as a businessman a. a. in Wittenberg. He was a soldier and sergeant in World War II, at the end of which he was taken prisoner by the Soviets. In 1945 he was released from a prisoner of war camp in Lithuania.

Act

From 1946 to 1951 he was a colleague of Walter Karbe (1877-1956) at the Neustrelitz state library with responsibility for soil monument preservation and nature conservation . From 1951 to 1975 he worked at the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Schwerin , from 1953 to 1975 as deputy director (director was Ewald Schuldt ). Hollnagel did a great job as head of the preservation of monuments in the districts of Rostock, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg (1954–1975). The development of a dense network of voluntary employees is exemplary. Diligence, systematics and a high level of specialist knowledge are reflected in the inventory works he wrote on the prehistoric and early historical monuments and finds in the districts of Neubrandenburg, Neustrelitz and Strasburg as well as the bibliography on the prehistory and early history of Mecklenburg. The two-headed, Slavic god figure on the Fischerinsel in Tollensesee near Neubrandenburg, which was discovered during his excavations in 1969, is one of the most important testimonies of Slavic history.

Hollnagel was unmarried and devoted himself entirely to archaeological research in his Mecklenburg homeland. He committed suicide on January 23, 1975 in the Ziegelsee in Schwerin . He found his final resting place in the new Neustrelitz cemetery.
