Adolf Wohlauer (born November 2, 1893 in Berlin , † after January 29, 1943 in the Auschwitz concentration camp or on the way there) was a German composer, conductor and owner of a music writing office.

Life

Adolf Wohlauer attended the Luisengymnasium in Berlin and was a student at the Stern Conservatory from 1909 to 1912 or 1913 in the piano classes of Paul Oehlschläger and Hans Torsdorf. According to his own statements, other teachers were Wilhelm Klatte , Leopold Schmidt, Georg Bertram and Traugott Ochs. Wohlauer studied political science in Berlin and Königsberg . In 1922 he received his doctorate in Königsberg with a thesis on "The foreign trade of the United States of America".

As early as 1913, Wohlauer was engaged as Kapellmeister at the Mellini Theater in Hanover , from 1913 to 1921 at the Theater des Westens in Berlin and from 1922 to 1924 at the Wallner Theater . He also made a guest appearance at the Berliner Schauspielhaus. From 1917 at the latest, he lived at Ansbacher Strasse 8 in Berlin, where he also set up his music writing office in 1921.

During his student days, Wohlauer also brought out two musical stage pieces, a Schwank called Kusinchen and the operetta Countess Paprika . The latter was premiered in 1916 in Breslau .

Adolf Wohlauer worked as part of the Jewish Cultural Association . He had no license to practice music and was not a member of the Reich Chamber of Music ; Nevertheless, even after the National Socialists came to power, he took on orders for his music writing office. In January 1938, employees of the Reich Chamber of Culture discovered a sign at the entrance to the house on Ansbacher Strasse, on which Wohlauer pointed to his office, and carried out an inspection. They found that Wohlauer had also supplied numerous “Aryan” customers, including Prince Joachim Albrecht of Prussia, Bruno Fieberg , Albert Joost , Renato Virgilio , Georg Walther , Maria Kolm , Rudolf Schulz-Dornburg , Georg Böttcher , Wilhelm Strienz , GA Backhaus , the Fürstin zu Eulenburg, the publishers Enke and Beboton, the German Air Sports Association and the Reich Association of Open Air Theaters. They then demanded the imposition of a fine of 600 Reichsmarks. In addition, Wohlauer had to put a reference to the Jewish Cultural Association on his door sign as well as on written material. He then changed the text on his door sign to “Notenschreibbüro Dr. Wohlauer ”and on March 11, 1938, he was fined 1500 Reichsmarks. The label was still not considered correct. Wohlauer's complaint against the penalty notice was rejected; however, he was allowed to pay the penalty in installments. On January 29, 1943, Adolf Wohlauer was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp. He has been missing since then.
