Adolfo J. de Bold OC (born September 14, 1942 in Paraná , Argentina ) is an Argentine-Canadian pathologist and physiologist.

De Bold studied medicine at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in Argentina, where he taught physics, pathology and histology. He completed his residency, chief residency at the Hospital Nacional de Clinicas in Córdoba . From 1974 he was a scientist at Queen's University (and at the Hotel Dieu Hospital) in Canada, where he obtained his master’s degree in 1971 and his doctorate in pathology in 1973 . In 1982 he became associate professor and 1985 professor at Queen's University. In 1986 he became Professor of Pathology and Physiology at the University of Ottawa . He serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and is the director of the endocrinology laboratory there.

In 1981 de Bold and several other scientists, such as the kidney specialist Harald Sonnenberg , discovered a hormone secreted by the heart, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP, ANF), which is used to regulate blood pressure. He also patented the hormone. The discovery that the heart produces hormones came as a surprise at the time, although it had long been known that granules were present in the atrium , which were typical of tissue that secretes polypeptide hormones, and that the expansion of the atrium increased secretion of water and sodium ions (which was attributed to a neural reflex).

In 1986 he received the Gairdner Foundation International Award and the Science Achievement Award from the American Society for Hypertension and the Research Achievement Award from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. In 1988 he received the Medal of Excellence in Research from the Royal Society of Canada, in 1994 the Ciba Award from the American Heart Association and he received the Research Achievement Award from the International Society of Hypertension. In 2014 he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

He is a Canadian citizen.
