Harald Sonnenberg (born in Montreal in 1937 ) is a Canadian biochemist who studies the physiology of the kidney .

Sonnenberg studied at the University of Alberta and received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin in 1964 . Since 1967 he was at the University of Toronto in the Faculty of Physiology, where he became a professor. In 1998 he retired.

He investigated the regulation of the sodium balance via the kidneys and its influence on high blood pressure . By Mikrokathetisierung he showed that the medullary collecting duct (medullary collecting duct, MCD) plays an important role in absorption of sodium by the kidney. As a member of Adolfo J. de Bold's team , he discovered the hormone atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP, ANF) secreted in the heart and used to regulate blood pressure.

In 1986 he received the Gairdner Foundation International Award . In 2003 he received the Medal of Research Excellence from the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
