Adolphe Gesché

Adolphe Gesché (born October 25, 1928 in Brussels , † November 30, 2003 in Louvain-la-Neuve) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest and theologian . He was a full professor of dogmatics at the Theological Faculty of the Catholic University of Leuven (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve and author of several theological publications.

biography

Adolphe Gesché was born into a liberal Catholic family. He passed his high school diploma at the Collège Saint-Pierre zu Uccle, began studying at the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis in Brussels at the age of 18, and after a two-year course he received a candidacy in philosophy . In 1949, after completing his military service, he made the decision to become a priest. He then obtained a licentiate in classical philology at the Catholic University of Leuven and at the same time - from 1951 - studied theology at the seminary in Mechelen. In 1955 he was ordained a priest. He continued his theological studies in Leuven, where he first acquired the degree of doctor of theology, then in 1962 to complete his studies as Maître agrégé in the same subject. From 1962 to 1969 he taught at the seminary in Mechelen, then was appointed full professor at the University of Leuven.

Doctrine and work

As a university lecturer, Adolphe Gesché shaped generations of students from Europe, America and Africa through his teaching and research. He closely followed the situation of Christianity and developed his theology in a conscious examination of the concepts that weighed on the belief in God . His work went beyond theology. Throughout his life he was committed to a better understanding and relationship between faith and contemporary culture, with the aim of being able to create more sustainable models of faith . His writings deal with a large number of different topics and are mostly included in his collection Dieu pour penser (German = God for thinking).

In 1970 he was a founding member of the executive committee of the Löwener theological journal Revue théologique de Louvain .

In 1991 he initiated the interdisciplinary colloquia Colloques Gesché at the Theological Faculty at Louvain-la-Neuve in collaboration with Paul Scolas . In these events, questions of faith and life are to be discussed in relation to other disciplines.

Gesché's grave is in the Blocry cemetery in Ottignies , not far from Louvain-la-Neuve.

Awards

Gesché has received numerous awards. He was a member of the “Religion and Theology” commission of the National Fund for Scientific Research (Belgium) and the European Society for Catholic Theology (Tübingen). In 1992 he was appointed to the International Theological Commission by the Holy See (until 2002). In 1993 he received the Prix ​​Cardinal Mercier from the Institut supérieur de philosophie at the University of Leuven. In 1997 he received the scriptores christiani award for his complete works and the following year in Paris the Grand prix de philosophie from the Académie française .

He was a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium and a Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown .
