Adolphe Tonduz
Adolphe Tonduz (born September 18, 1862 in Pully , † December 20, 1921 in Guatemala ) was a Swiss botanist. He was a pioneer in researching the flora of Costa Rica and Guatemala. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Tonduz ”.
Life
Tonduz studied at the University of Lausanne without a degree, was assistant to Jean Balthasar Schnetzler and was a taxidermist at the Natural History Museum and Botanical Cabinet in Lausanne from 1885 to 1887. In 1889 he went to Costa Rica at the invitation of Henri Pittier , where he built up the botany department at the national institute for physical geography and the national herbarium . He dealt with plant diseases and worked from 1905 for the United Fruit Company in San José before returning to the national herbarium. In 1921 he went to Guatemala and headed the plant diseases department at the agricultural authority.
Except in Costa Rica, parts of his herbarium are at the Botanical Garden in Brussels, whose director Théophile Durand (1855–1912) was a friend of Henri Pittier.
Numerous (around 300) plant species are named after him.
