Adriana Olguín
Adriana Olguín de Baltra (born November 18, 1911 in Valparaíso , Valparaíso Province , † December 24, 2015 in Viña del Mar , Valparaíso Province) was a Chilean lawyer and politician who was Minister of Justice in 1952, becoming the first minister of Chile and Latin America .
Life
After attending school, Adriana Olguín began studying law at the Universidad de Chile , which she graduated in 1938. During her studies in 1937, she began working as a secretary for the city administration of Valparaíso and was employed there until 1940. In 1940 she married the lawyer and politician Alberto Baltra , who was Minister for Economy and Trade between 1947 and 1950 and a Senator from 1968 to 1973. She herself became head of the women's office (Oficina de la Mujer) in 1946 and held this position until 1952.
On July 29, 1952, she was appointed Minister of Justice (Ministra de Justicia) by President Gabriel González Videla as successor to Humberto Parada and held this ministerial office until the end of President Gabriel González Videla's term of office on November 3, 1952. She thus became the first woman Minister of Chile and Latin America.
In 1955, after being admitted to the Bar (Colegio de Abogados) , she began practicing law and later worked from 1962 to 1966 as an advisor to the General Controller of the Republic (Contraloría General de la República de Chile) . In addition, she acted in the 1960s as a paralegal of the State Defense Council (Consejo de Defensa del Estadio) . In 1981 she became a member of the State Council (Consejo de Estado de Chile) established in 1976 , to which she was a member until 1989. In 1983 she also became a member of the Academy of Social, Political and Moral Sciences (Academia Chilena de Ciencias Sociales, Políticas y Morales) , of which she was vice-president from 1995 to 1997 and again between 1998 and 2000.
Adriana Olguín was buried in the Central Cemetery of Santiago de Chile (Cementerio General de Santiago) .
