Adriano Prosperi (born August 21, 1939 in Cerreto Guidi ) is an Italian historian and journalist.

Life

Prosperi studied at the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore , where he was a student of Armando Saitta and Delio Cantimori . He has taught at the University of Calabria , the University of Bologna , the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore (from 2001).

He is particularly known for his book Tribunals of Conscience on the various instruments of rule of the Catholic Church, with which it cemented its influence in the Counter-Reformation in Italy at the turn of the 16th to 17th centuries , through the Inquisition , confession and missionaries. This sparked a debate among historians in Italy ( Carlo Ginzburg was one of the proponents of the theses, Giovanni Romeo was one of the critics ). In the same area he dealt with the handling of heretics and Jews through the Inquisition, the history of the Jesuits and the Council of Trenton which the reaction of the Catholic Church to the Reformation was negotiated.

He wrote for the feature pages of Corriere della Sera and Il Sole 24 Ore and later for La Repubblica . He was increasingly involved in politics, for example against Berlusconi .

In 2012 he protested against the move of the University Library of Pisa from its historic site to a Capuchin monastery near Pisa.

He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei (since 1989) and the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino (since 2018).

His daughter Valentina Prosperi is also a historian.
