Adsum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adsum ( Latin for "here I am") is in the Roman rite in the rites of ordination or in the consecration of a virgin the answer to the bishop's call to the candidates by name in front of the assembled community. Call and answer, which take place after the opening of the service and before the ordination, take place symbolically in front of the whole church, which elects the candidates for ordination.

In the extraordinary form of the Roman rite , in which the minor orders are still given, the candidates are also called to these by name and respond to the call with "Adsum".

The form of the rite is based on the pericope from the first book of Samuel ( 1 Sam 3, 4, 5,  EU ), in which God calls the prophet Samuel and he replies: "Here I am, because you have called me".
