description
Agave promontorii forms thick stems with several large, open rosettes. Individual rosettes reach heights of growth of up to 250 cm. The variable, lanceolate, fleshy, green to bluish leaves are 100 to 150 cm long and 11 to 17 cm wide. The leaf margins are serrated. The flexibly arranged, dark brown terminal mandrel is 3 to 5 cm long.
The paniculate, massive, straight inflorescence becomes 5 to 9 m high. The bell-shaped, yellow flowers are 60 to 75 mm long and appear from the middle of the inflorescence and reach the tip, on loose, long, irregularly arranged branches. The flower tube is 14 to 15 mm long.
The variably shaped three-chamber capsule fruits are 15 to 20 mm long and 30 to 35 mm wide. The black, seeds are 4 to 5 mm long and 6 to 9 mm wide.
Systematics and distribution
Agave promontorii grows in Mexico in the state of Baja California Sur in mountainous regions on granite slopes at an altitude of 900 to 1800 m. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.
The first description by William Trelease was published in 1912.
Agave promontorii is a member of the Campaniflorae group . The species is distributed in the south of Baja California in the Sierra de Laguna and Cabo-San-Lucas region. The flower structure is similar to that of the other members of the Campaniflorae group. Typical is the overall massive size, the soft, fleshy leaves and the high inflorescence. It is closely related to Agave capensis and Agave aurea , but differs significantly in size, shape, leaf and flower structure.
