description

Vegetative characteristics

Silene pinetorum is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 30 centimeters. It is thickly covered with glandular hair. The roots are slightly fleshy. The stems are simple, upright and slightly tufted or solitary. The basal leaves are 4 to 8 centimeters long and 1 to 1.5 centimeters wide, elliptical-inverted-lanceolate, rarely sack-shaped. The midrib protrudes. The leaf base is wedge-shaped or tapered to a point. The tip of the leaf is pointed or rarely rounded. The stem leaves are smaller than the basal leaves and often arranged in one to three pairs.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time is in July. The few flowers are slightly nodding, towards the end of flowering they are erect. The flower stalk is densely covered with glandular hair and 1 to 5 centimeters long. The bracts are 5 to 10 millimeters long, lanceolate and hairy with glands.

The flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold. The calyx is approximately 1.5 × 1 centimeters, wide, bell-shaped, slightly sack-shaped, open at the tip and rounded at the base. The longitudinal veins are somewhat strong, dark purple and hairy with glands. The calyx teeth are about 3 millimeters large and wide triangular-ovoid. Its edge is white, membranous and eyelashed short, its tip is pointed. The androgynophore is bald and about 2 millimeters in size. The five petals protrude slightly behind the calyx. The nail of the corolla is approximately wedge-shaped and ciliate at its base. The broad, obovate plate has two blunt ears on the side and is deeply in two parts. The resulting corolla lobes are narrowly elliptical, with a blunt end, notched or slightly in two parts, short one-lobed or slightly toothed on two sides. The scales on the petals are fan-shaped. The stamens protrude slightly above the corolla. The stamens are hairy. The style does not protrude above the corolla.

The fruits ripen in August. The capsule fruits are egg-shaped with a length of about 1.2 centimeters and open ten-toothed. The brown seeds are spherical-kidney-shaped with a size of about 1 millimeter.

Occurrence

Silene nangqenensis occurs in China in southern Qinghai and eastern Tibet . It grows on alpine meadows at altitudes of 4200 to 4600 meters.
