Street in Advancetown (2016)

Advancetown is located on the eastern edge of the hilly coastal mountains , the so-called Gold Coast hinterland .

The nearby Hinze Dam, raised several times, is one of the most important drinking water reservoirs for the residents of the Gold Coast. The lake has an area of 15 square kilometers, the dam is 1850 meters long.

history

The Avenue of Commemorative Trees is on the Gold Coast Heritage List.

In 1870, woodcutters first invaded the Advancetown area to cut wood in the Pine Mountains . Before that, Aborigines lived in this area . In 1881 the first European settlement of the area began by David Yuan, who built a sawmill.

The small settlement began to grow when timber trucks from the McPherson Range to Nerang Railway Station passed halfway through the town. The place was used by carters for resting and overnight stays. In 1938 up to 24 teams of oxen were still active in the area for transporting timber.

The first hotel opened in 1884, the Beechmont Hotel , which Ernest Belliss bought in 1905 and renamed the Advancetown Hotel . Belliss later gave part of his property for the Advancetown School . He sold the hotel in March 1924, which burned down seven years later. A new Advancetown Hotel was built that same year and opened in February 1934. The Advancetown State School began operating in 1909 and closed in 1913. It reopened five years later, only to close again in 1952. In 1977 the Hinze Dam was built, which lies between Advancetown Lake and the Nerang River . Since the Advancetown settlement was partially flooded, it had to be abandoned.

After the flooding, the surrounding area was renamed Latimer because of the adjacent Latimer Creek . On May 11, 1985, the small town was renamed Advancetown again. Some historic homes are inscribed on the Gold Coast Monument Register.

The suburb was part of the Shire of Albert until it was merged with the LGA Gold Coast City in 1995 .
