Aegidius Elsevier

Aegidius Elsevier (* before 1580 in Wesel ; † July 1, 1651 in Leiden ) was a Dutch bookseller and merchant .

Life

Aegidius Elsevier was born in Wesel in an unknown year as the third son of Louis Elzevir and Maria Duverdyn. In 1580 he moved to Leiden with his father and had been a bookseller in Hamm since 1599 . In that year he published the Navigatio Joh. Huigens de Linschoten . Hagae Comitis officina Alberti Henrici, impensis authoris et Cornelii Nicolei prostantque apud Aegidium Elsevirium . In 1603, four years later, he gave up the profession of bookseller and returned to Leiden, where he worked as a merchant from then on, which he remained until his death on July 1, 1651.
