Aegle kaekeritziana , sometimes also found in the literature with the epithets koekeritziana , coeceritziana , flavida , flava or sulphurifera , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

The moths reach a wingspan of 20 to 26 millimeters. The forewings are almost monochrome pale gray-green to gray-yellow. The apex is pointed. In some specimens a point-like black kidney flaw can be seen. The outermost hemline usually shimmers slightly reddish. The hind wings are dark gray-brown without drawing.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are green-yellow to yellow-gray and have an indistinct, broad, gray topline. The gray side stripes are bordered by orange at the bottom. The small head is light brown, the pronotum and spiracles are black.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution of Aegle kaekeritziana ranges from some places in south-eastern Europe and the Mediterranean region as well as eastwards via Turkey and the Caucasus to Transcaucasia . In the German-speaking area, the species has been found in a few places in Burgenland . The animals are mainly found in warm and dry steppe areas.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly from May to the end of August and also visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on various larkspur species ( Delphinium ). They pupate in a tight web.
