Aelurillus v-insignitus is a spider from the family of the jumping spiders (Salticidae).
features
The species is one of the medium-sized jumping spiders. Males have a body length of 4 to 5 mm, females reach 5–7 mm. Like many jumping spiders, the species shows a clear sexual dimorphism in terms of color and drawing. The male has light cinnamon-brown hair on his front, his pedipalps are creamy yellow. Its two front median eyes glow a striking green. The most striking feature is a V-shaped drawing on the forehead, to which the specific epithet refers (Latin v-insignitus = the V-marked).
In the larger and clumsier female, white patches of hair are noticeable on both sides next to the front median eyes. Otherwise it is inconspicuously gray-brown, yellow-brown or dark gray piebald and is very well camouflaged by this color.
distribution and habitat
Aelurillus v-insignitus is widespread in Central Europe. The species inhabits dry, sparsely vegetated habitats with stony or sandy subsoil, e.g. B. rubble, sand heaths, dunes or rock steppes.
Way of life
The species is ground-dwelling and tied to small areas free of vegetation. In bad weather, the animals stay in a web sack that is placed between grains of sand or under parts of plants. Sexually mature animals can be found from May to July.
Danger
The species is widespread and common in suitable habitats. In Germany it is classified as "safe" in the Red List .
