The Aeolidiidae are a family of thread snails in the subordination of the nudibranchs . They are mostly small to medium-sized, exclusively marine, houseless snail species that mainly eat sea anemones .

features

The Aeolidiidae have two mobile mouth feelers that are longer than the smooth rhinophores sitting above the head . The back is covered with transverse rows of Cerata , into which, like other thread snails, extensions of the midgut gland lead, the sections of which correspond to the rows of Cerata. The runners end in so-called nettle sacks, also known as cnido sacks, in which the nettle capsules of the cnidarians that are eaten are stored and serve to defend the snails against predators.

The single-row radula has broad, comb-like teeth, in some species with a medium notch. The jaws have a smooth edge. The anus opens behind the foremost rows of the cerata on the right side of the body, into which the runners of the anterior left lobe of the midgut gland lead.

Like other thread snails, the Aeolidiidae are hermaphrodites . They have an unreinforced penis and two receptacula seminis . The snails mate with each other and lay their eggs in long egg strings, in whose transparent shell you can see the numerous eggs. Numerous Veliger larvae hatch from these, feed on plankton and after a long pelagic phase they metamorphose into small thread snails .

The Aeolidiidae eat cnidarians, especially sea anemones .

The Aeolidiidae are usually no longer than a few centimeters. One of the largest species is the waxy thread snail ( Aeolidia papillosa ) , which can also be found in the North Sea and is over 10 cm in size .

Systematics

According to Bouchet and Rocroi (2005), the family Aeolidiidae is one of four families in the superfamily Aeolidioidea . The family includes twelve genera:

The generic names Aeolis Menke, 1844, Eolidia Cuvier, 1816 and Eolis Cuvier, 1805, which can be found more frequently in older literature, are synonyms of the older generic name Aeolidia Cuvier, 1797.
