The Aerodromnaya Hill ( Russian Гора Аэродромная Gora Aerodromnaja , German ' Flugplatzberg ' ) is an isolated and rocky hill in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises 1.5 km south of the Schirmacher Oasis .
Participants in the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher took first aerial photographs and carried out rough mapping. Soviet scientists re-mapped the ledge in 1961 and renamed it. The background to this name is that an airfield was created in the vicinity of the hill to supply the Novolasarewskaya station . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names transferred the Russian name in 1970 in an adapted partial translation into English.
