After construction began in 2008, the Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región de Murcia airport was completed four years later in 2012 and on January 15, 2019 by King Felipe VI. opened by Spain. According to the planning specifications, it is supposed to handle the civil air traffic volume for the region Murcia - Cartagena with the touristically important salt water lagoon Mar Menor and the spit La Manga del Mar Menor and for a relief from the environmental emissions for the population around San Javier from the civil flight operations of the former Murcia-San Javier airport , which has only been used for military purposes since the opening of the new regional airport, as has been the case for the San Javier military airfield since 1929.
