Aes Dana is a French Celtic / Pagan Metal band from Paris . The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Aois-dàna ( áes dána in Old Irish ) and literally means 'people of art'.
history
Aes Dana was founded in 1994 by Taliesin (guitar) and Amorgen ( tin whistle and flute). Shortly afterwards, singer Vidar and drummer Storm (also with Antaeus and Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition) joined the band. In 1996 bassist Christophe joined them and in December the Chroniques du Crépuscule demo was recorded. The band rehearsed in Saint Ouen near Paris, at the same location as Antaeus and Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition.
In 1997, bassist Milambre (ex-Despond) and guitarist Seth (Antaeus, Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition) joined Aes Dana. The band gave a few concerts in Paris and moved to the New York studio in north Paris.
In 1999 Storm left the band and was replaced by JuanJolocaust. In April of the next year they went into the studio to record a maxi CD , which was then released in 2000 on their own. Seth was replaced by Tilion on guitar because Seth wanted to concentrate more on his other bands. The band also moved to a new rehearsal room in the Luna Rossa Studio in the 13th arrondissement . In 2000, Amorgen and Taliesin also joined the band Bran Barr .
In June 2001 a record deal was signed with Sacral Productions. Then they went back to the studio and recorded their debut album La Chasse Sauvage , which was released in November 2001. After the second album, Formors , was recorded at ArtCrim Studios in 2004, Amorgen Aes left Dana to focus on novel writing. In January 2005, Taliesin left Paris and Aes Dana and moved to French Guiana. Guitarist Aegir (Apocriphall) and flautist Myrddin joined the band. After problems with Sacral Productions, Aes Dana ended all relations with the record company and released Formors in October 2005 on Adipocere Records / Oaken Shield. The album was named after the violent and misshapen Irish mythical people Fomori .
In 2008 the band signed a record deal with a German label. Aegir left the group and moved to London; he was replaced by Taliesin, who had returned to Paris. Junjolocaust got out and moved to southern Spain, Aes also left Dana. Ireel became the new guitarist in 2010, and drummer Wilfrid (Forest of Souls) joined in 2011. Aes Dana is currently working on her third album.
style
Chroniques du Crépuscule is based on atmospheric Black Metal , the English-language lyrics deal with visions, chimeras and legends. Due to the noise of Storm's drums in the band's first rehearsal room, Amorgen had to attach her flute to the microphone and play it loudly to be heard at all, and invented a new technique called tin whistle. From 1997 the pieces became more brutal, and Taliesin and Amorgen wrote texts in French about pagan sagas.
From 2000 the band wanted to integrate more traditional instruments into their music; Amorgen wanted to use a medieval bombard and came across a Catalan oboe at a folk festival in Saint Chartier . The influences of the musicians come from death metal , black metal , grindcore and traditional music. The lyrics deal with old legends and especially with bards , Celtic poets and singers. Most of the lyrics are in French, but the band also uses some of the English language.
