The band was founded in 1995 by Aed Morban. The first line-up was in 1996 with Yolta as singer and keyboard player, and Fir Doirtche and Brennus as guitarists and background singers. When Taliesin joined the band in 1998 as a bassist and Amorgen as a flautist, the keyboard was not used.
The debut album Les Chroniques de Naerg was recorded and produced independently and was finally released in April 2000. Irish bagpipes, bombards and bodhrans were also used on the album . The texts dealt with a fictional, pre-Christian, Celtic world. Due to the album's success, it was re-released in February 2001.
After a few concerts, Bran Barr was inactive due to various side projects by the musicians and some complications. That changed again when Kraban got on board in 2003.
In July 2008 the band signed a contract for four albums with the German label Det Germanske Folket , which was soon canceled.
In November 2009 Bran Barr switched to the German label Trollzorn and released the second album, Sidh , in February 2010 , which was recorded in 2005.
Bran Barr combines Breton / Norman / Celtic folk music with black , death and thrash metal elements. The song genre is typical screaming , wherein occasionally clean voice occurs. The lyrics deal with various Celtic topics.
