The automatic cannon Afanasjew-Makarow AM-23 ( Russian Афанасьев Макаров АМ-23 ) is a Soviet on-board weapon , which was used from 1949 in long-range bombers and transport aircraft of the USSR and the Warsaw Treaty . The AM-23 is a 23 mm caliber gas pressure charger specially designed for use in aircraft . The developers adopted the design principle from the Afanasjew A-12.7 in the 12.7 × 108 mm caliber and the 23 mm SU-23 anti-aircraft gun . The AM-23 is used in twin mountings as defensive armament in various aircraft.
