Afectos com Letras ( Portuguese , roughly: "Affection for letters") is a Portuguese aid organization . It was founded in September 2009 in Pombal .

It is financed through sponsorships ( BAOBA project ) and donations, and through various public grants (Portuguese development aid, EU), and the Portuguese savings bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos is a partner of Afectos com Letras. Despite a comparatively small budget (2016: just under € 46,000) and only a few volunteer employees, the association manages numerous projects in Guinea-Bissau, mainly through donating goods and services that it provides to Portuguese companies and authorities, but also obtained by the EU.

The organization is recognized as a non-profit association ( Instituição de Utilidade Pública ) and as Organização Não Governamental para o Desenvolvimento (ONGD, non-governmental organization for development) by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros ).

aims

The non - profit, non - governmental organization aims to promote education, health and further training, especially for women.

After several training and awareness-raising projects in Portugal, Afectos com Letras is now particularly involved in development aid in Guinea-Bissau , where it has had a branch since 2012.

Guinea-Bissau

The West African country of Guinea-Bissau is the main goal of Afectos com Letras' project work.

The former Portuguese colony is dependent on development aid in many areas, but is considered to be chronically unstable after a series of domestic political crises with coups d'etat and a civil war. Apart from the former colonial power Portugal and the European Union (EU), most of the states have therefore stopped their aid projects in the country, and Guinea-Bissau is hardly supported by international aid organizations either. The few non-governmental organizations that continue to carry out projects in the country are predominantly Portuguese initiatives, in addition to the Assistência Médica Internacional (AMI), especially Afectos com Letras. Their work is always positively noticed both in Portugal and in Guinea-Bissau.

One of their most effective publicity actions in 2012 was the establishment of the first public library since Guinea-Bissau's independence in 1974 with initially 12,000 books in the rooms of the Ministry of Education in the Universidade Amílcar Cabral , and the installation of public bookcases in urban green spaces and at the petrol stations of the market leader Galp , the are present in the most important localities throughout Guinea-Bissau.

Afectos com Letras then received special attention with the publication of the book " À Descoberta da Guiné-Bissau " at the end of 2015, which was presented to the public in spring 2016. This was the first travel guide to Guinea-Bissau. It was created in cooperation with the EU and was funded by it. The work was published in four languages (Portuguese, English, French and Spanish) and was subsequently made available for free download. The printed edition is now considered sold out.

In addition to these high-profile campaigns, Afectos com Letras carries out a number of medium and long-term projects in Guinea-Bissau, including schools, preschools and kindergartens, some of which are continued through neighborhood assistance. Teachers receive salaries and training from Afectos com Letras, as well as training programs for educators and health professionals.
Community rice husking machines and health education projects, including delivering eight tons of medication to hospitals and health posts in 2014, are among the other projects that often aim to educate and empower women.

The BAOBA project, named after the Portuguese spelling of the African baobab tree , has also made it possible to sponsor pupils and school classes in Guinea-Bissau since 2014 .
