Affair Gregory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gregory affair (in the original: Affaire Grégory) was one of the most famous murders in France in 1984. The case is considered one of the most mysterious murders in French criminal history.

Course of events

Four-year-old Gregory was found with his hands and legs tied in the Vologne River near his parents' home. The act was believed to have been committed on October 16, 1984. The boy was kidnapped before the murder . A man then contacted Gregory's parents and called his act an act of revenge. In addition, several letters emerged in the course of the investigation, in which revenge was also mentioned as the motive for the crime. The investigation initially focused on one of the boy's uncle, who was arrested but soon released. The victim's father later shot the suspect and was sentenced to five years in prison. The boy's mother was later also suspected, but the investigation was closed due to a lack of evidence.

The case was reopened in 2008. Due to DNA traces on the stamps of the said letters and the shackles, the case should still be clarified.

On June 13, 2017, there were three arrests in the Gregory case. An elderly couple from the Bruyères area and one other person have been arrested for the time being. They are being  investigated for complicity in murder, concealment of a criminal offense and failure to provide assistance .

On July 11, 2017, examining magistrate Jean-Michel Lambert, who had handled the Gregory case in 1984, was found dead in his Le Mans apartment. The police concluded that Lambert died by suicide . The judge made numerous mistakes during the investigation, so the case was withdrawn from him.
