The monkey and bird park Eckenhagen is an animal park in the municipality of Reichshof in the Oberbergisches Kreis , North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The park has its origins in a bird collection, which was first created in 1972 in an Upper Bavarian enclosure on a 3000 m² swamp meadow. The purpose was to carry out a comparative behavioral research in the sense of Konrad Lorenz .

After the decision was made to turn it into a bird park, the choice fell on a site belonging to the Wiedenhof church estate in the Reichshof community. Planning began in 1978, and the opening took place on May 1, 1981. Originally eight employees worked in the zoo, now the number has grown to 40.

In the opening year there were 150 species of birds with more than 1000 animals in the park, 65,000 visitors came.

The site now has an area of eight hectares and a three-kilometer circular path leads through the park. There are around 140 species of animals, a petting zoo, play equipment for children and a garden café.
