The Affenberg Landskron is a zoo in Villach and at the same time Austria's largest open-air monkey enclosure with around 160 Japanese macaques . The keeping of animals is semi-free compared to other zoos, which means that the animals live in a fenced, wooded property, which represents a 40,000 m² habitat for the monkeys. The Affenberg is a category A zoo operation under Austrian law. It has around 120,000 visitors annually and does not receive any public funding.

The Affenberg in Villach has existed since 1996, modeled on the Barbary ape mountains such as the Affenberg Salem , which have existed as independent parks or as part of larger zoos since the 1970s.
In 1996, all the monkeys broke out (39 animals at the time), which drew media attention. All monkeys were recaptured within six weeks.
Cooperation with universities
Since 1998 there has been a collaboration with the University of Vienna and the University of Graz ; There is also a cooperation with the University of Kyoto. Here students have the opportunity to conduct behavioral research on the monkeys.

Visiting the Affenberg is only possible for visitors as part of a 45-minute tour, which is offered several times a day. The biology of the apes is explained as well as cultural and ethological aspects. The learning ability of the macaques is demonstrated at a station with intelligence games. There are two ponds in the enclosure, where you can watch swimming and diving macaques, especially on hot days.
The Affenberg is located directly below Landskron Castle , where the Landskron Castle Eagle Arena is also located, and can be reached via a private road.
