Affonso Eduardo Reidy (born October 26, 1909 in Paris , † August 10, 1964 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian architect.

Alongside Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa, he is considered one of the most important representatives of Brazilian modernism. Together with Le Corbusier , Niemeyer, Costa and Jorge Machado Moreira , he was responsible for the Ministry of Education and Health planned for 1937–1943 (today the Palace of Culture) in Rio de Janeiro. Another major work by Reidy is the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro , built in 1954 , whose gardens were designed by Roberto Burle Marx .

Life

The son of a British and a Brazilian woman began his architecture studies at the age of 17 at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro. From 1930 to 31 he worked there as an assistant to Gregori Warchavchik . In 1931 he was appointed professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and from 1932 he was chief architect of the city of Rio de Janeiro. He was married to the Brazilian architect and political activist Carmen Portinho .
