The Africa Open is a golf tournament on the Sunshine Tour that was held for the first time in February 2008 on the championship course designed by Gary Player at the Fish River Sun Country Club near Port Alfred in South Africa .

In order to raise the profile of the tournament, it has been held at East London Golf Club in East London since January 2009 . In 2009 the Africa Open had a cash prize of five million rand , which is more than four times the price of the opening event. The Sunshine Tour hoped that this would attract a stronger field of players and achieve a cooperation with the European Tour in the following years.

In October 2009 it was announced that the Africa Open would be part of the 2010 European tour calendar. It was the third of four tournaments of the so-called South African swing and has since taken place after the Alfred Dunhill Championship and South African Open and in the week before the Joburg Open . The prize money for 2011 was 1,000,000 euros.
