from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The African Transformation Movement ( ATM for short ; German for example: “ African Transformation Movement ”) is a political party founded in South Africa in May 2018 . She first took part in the 2019 elections.

history

The party was founded in May 2018 as the political arm of the South African Council of Messianic Churches in Christ (SACMCC), which are considered evangelical and, according to their own statements, represent several million believers. Reference was made to the allegedly subordinate role that the churches of the African Independent Churches played in relation to the established churches. Initially the party was called the African Transformation Congress , the name of the party had to be renamed at the urging of the Independent Electoral Commission because of the risk of confusion with other Congress parties. Vuyolwethu Zungula was elected the first president and chairman. Internal party chairman of the Eastern Cape Province was Veliswa Mvenya, who had previously held this office for the Democratic Alliance . Other members include former MP for the Economic Freedom Fighters Zolile Xhalisa. In the 2019 elections in South Africa , when the party ran for the first time, it won 0.44% and two seats. In addition, it has since been represented by one member each in the provincial assemblies of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal .

In the aftermath of the elections, it will be investigated whether General Secretary Ace Magashule of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) was involved in the establishment to support the former President Jacob Zuma (also ANC) against the incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa .

Structure and program

The party is led by a president. SACMCC makes decisions of the party by means of a council decision.

The party emblem is a five-point star in black, blue, green and yellow with the abbreviation ATM on a point and name and the motto to the right of the star. The motto is Transforming society for a better tomorrow (for example: "Reshaping society for a better tomorrow") and is similar to the SACMCC motto, Transforming society through Christ (for example: " Reshaping society through Christ "). Another ATM slogan is Put South Africans first!

The program items of the ATM include

  • the reintroduction of the death penalty
  • raising the minimum requirements for passing school exams

Former cabinet spokesman Mzwanele Manyi is the ATM's policy chief . He was a follower of Zuma. The ATM refuses to be seen as a supporter of Zuma.
